Fun Facts: Northeast Los Angeles
- Route 66 traverses many historic neighborhoods in northeast Los Angeles, including El Sereno, Montecito Heights, Lincoln Heights, Glassell Park, Cypress Park, and Elysian Park. Some areas were inside the original boundaries of Los Angeles, others were annexed later; but all have been part of the city for over a century.
- Many of these neighborhoods are known for their Latino culture. The area features many Mexican restaurants, panaderias (bakeries), and Latino-oriented shops.
- Route 66 travels through here on multiple alignments, including the Arroyo Seco Parkway – the first freeway in the U.S. – with its scenic, Art Deco style tunnels and bridges. The oldest alignment features the Buena Vista Viaduct, built in 1911 to cross the L.A. River. Now called the North Broadway Bridge, this span features tall entrance columns and a view of downtown, including City Hall.
