Fun Facts: Chinatown neighborhood, Los Angeles
- This vibrant district surrounds Broadway, downtown L.A.’s stretch of Route 66. However, the ethnic neighborhood did not start out there. Most of the city’s original Chinatown, which had existed nearby since at least the 1860s, was condemned and razed for the construction of L.A.’s Union Station in the 1930s. One rare survivor, the 1890 Garnier Building, is now part of the El Pueblo de Los Angeles Historical Monument; it hosts the Chinese American Museum.
- Visitors traveling Route 66 today can visit the New Chinatown Historic District to experience authentic Chinese cuisine; shop at legacy businesses; and explore landmarks like Central Plaza.
