The California Route 66 Online Map
The path of Route 66 in California was altered many times over its lifetime. Using the My Maps feature of Google Maps, our detailed online map was created to mark all of the numerous alignments of Route 66, to the best of our knowledge. Color-coding is used to distinguish between alignments of differing ages, and the map includes former paths of Route 66 that are inaccessible or that no longer exist. Each marked segment is annotated with a description, as well as the time period that it was utilized as Route 66. We hope you enjoy this deep dive into the many alignments of Route 66 in the Golden State.
After the link above is first opened in Google My Maps, Google account owners will also find it directly accessible in Google Maps using the Saved -> Maps link on desktop browsers, or the You -> Maps link on mobile devices. It is also downloadable from within Google Maps and My Maps, as a KML or KMZ file for use in Google Earth and other programs.
Our deepest appreciation goes out to the numerous historians and researchers who have worked diligently over many years to trace the past alignments of Route 66. Thanks are due most especially to Route 66 experts Jerry McClanahan and Jim Ross, whose extensive archive and field research has greatly expanded the Route 66 community's knowledge of old alignments. Without their work, including the EZ66 Guide For Travelers and the Deep Tracks Map Series, our detailed online map might not have been possible.
