Fun Facts: Eagle Rock, Los Angeles
- Eagle Rock got its name from a huge boulder overlooking the area – part of which resembles an eagle taking flight.
- Eagle Rock incorporated in 1911, but its time as an independent city was short; residents approved its annexation by L.A. in 1923. Historic buildings include the Center for the Arts Eagle Rock - originally a 1914 Carnegie library; the 1914 Craftsman-style clubhouse of the Women's Twentieth Century Club, and the 1923 Eagle Rock City Hall.
- Eagle Rock is home to Occidental College, one of the West Coast’s oldest liberal arts colleges. Its students have included everyone from award-winning filmmakers Terry Gilliam and Ben Affleck to President Barack Obama. Another U.S. President, Ronald Reagan, was one of many stars who acted in film shoots on the school’s picturesque, historic campus. “Oxy” remains a popular filming location for movies, TV shows, and commercials.
- Despite its proximity to downtown L.A., Eagle Rock still maintains a charming, small-town feel. For outdoor lovers, the area’s parks and hiking trails offer a respite from urban life – as well as stunning views of the San Gabriel Mountains. Nevetheless, Route 66 travelers following Colorado Blvd. and Eagle Rock Blvd. will be cruising through the heart of the community, with quirky shops and art galleries, an independent movie house, and multiple vintage restaurants.
