- “Cucamonga” means “sandy place,” named for the Kucamongan people who lived here centuries ago.
- Back in 1839, Tubercio Tapia was given a 13,000-acre land grant—where he built a ranch, raised cattle, and started what is now the historic Thomas Winery. The city’s seal proudly shows a cluster of grapes, a nod to its rich winemaking roots.
- By the 1880s, this area was buzzing with innovation; George Chaffey brought hydro-electric power, lighting the way for progress.
- In 1977, three unincorporated communities (Alta Loma, Cucamonga, and Etiwanda) joined forces to become Rancho Cucamonga, kicking off a building boom that turned it into the vibrant city of over 175,000 people that it is today.
